Because Texas does not recognize same-sex marriages, there are certain rights and benefits that traditional couples enjoy which aren’t available to same-sex couples. That’s why many of these couples seek legal assistance in drafting domestic partnership agreements and other contractual agreements. These documents can provide same-sex partners with peace of mind in knowing that their best interests will be protected in the event of illness, death or a breakup.
Recent changes have provided same-sex couples with increased benefits including some companies that are offering health benefits. Now, personal car insurance companies are jumping on board. Esurance, the popular car insurance agency, has announced that they will offer the same car insurance discounts to same-sex couples as they offer traditional couples.
The discounts are based on factors including vehicle, driving record and accident history. Discounts can result in savings as high as 10 percent or more. Esurance currently offers the discount to same-sex partners in a handful of states but changes will provide the option for couples in at least 21 states across the nation, including Texas.
The company is offering the benefits regardless of where specific states stand on the issue of same-sex marriage and other issues. According to the president and chief executive officer at the insurance agency, “Esurance is firmly committed to recognizing and supporting diversity for its customers.” The move is just another “win” for same-sex couples seeking similar legal rights and benefits offered to traditional couples. It will be interesting to see if more insurance agencies begin offering similar discounts.
